The Marketing Work Buyers Never See

🌱 Why most B2B buyers show up already decided

Recently, I tried to find a digital tool for a well-defined problem.

I knew what I needed, but after browsing multiple sites, I still couldn’t tell who was actually right for my use case, so I booked a call to find out.

It made me think about how often unclear touchpoints add unnecessary steps to the buying journey.

How marketing does the hard work before the sales call

A lead does not decide to speak with sales at random. A sequence happens first.

1️⃣ They encounter one of your touchpoints and evaluate your offer.

2️⃣ If the information is sufficient, they move forward on their own. If it is not, or if purchasing requires a demo, they reach out to sales.🔴 According to 6sense, the sales conversation no longer marks the start of the buying process, it comes after key decisions are made. 81% of buyers already have a preferred vendor at first contact, and 85% have defined their requirements.

By the time buyers book a meeting, they are not looking for an introduction. They are looking for confirmation.

When marketing does this work well, sales conversations change:

🔷 Less time explaining what you do🔷 Fewer surface-level objections🔷 Faster internal alignment on the buyer’s side

In short, marketing absorbs complexity so sales can focus on decision-making.

How to apply this in practice

Before a buyer speaks to sales, three things should already be clear.

1️⃣ Can I tell if this is for me?: Make fit and non-fit explicit. State who this is for, the problem it solves, and when it is not a good match.

2️⃣ Do I understand the problem you solve?: Use one clear problem statement everywhere. Same wording across content, sales, and demos.

3️⃣ Can I decide if this is worth a call?: Answer why you win, what changes after adoption, and what tradeoffs exist using FAQs, comparisons, and concrete examples.
