SEO, GEO, AI search… How many times have you heard those terms this year?
They've become the center of almost every marketing conversation.
The talk seems endless: Is SEO dead? Does GEO matter more now? Is AI search changing everything?
🔴 But underneath lies a single concern: Will my website still get organic traffic?
Is SEO actually dead?
🚨 Google recently introduced the biggest change to search in over 25 years.
Instead of scrolling through pages of links, users now get an AI-generated answer right below the search bar.
😟 Naturally, that has a lot of companies worried: "If a potential customer searches 'best paper and office supply company in Austin' and simply chooses one of the businesses mentioned in the AI-generated answer, what happens to everyone else?" "Organic traffic is dying. SEO matters less now. We should stop investing in traditional search and focus entirely on GEO."
But we have to look at the whole picture.
First of all, let's quickly refresh the meaning of each term:
💻 SEO (Search Engine Optimization) helps your website rank higher on search engines through content, keywords, backlinks, and technical optimization.
🤖 GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) helps AI platforms understand, cite, and mention your content when generating answers.
Now that that's in mind, let's look at the numbers...
📊 A study concluded this month found that of 79 businesses, organic search remains the largest identifiable source of brand discovery on Google (16%), ahead of AI Answers (11%), paid ads (5%), local listings (4%), shopping (3%), and video content (2%).
Now, this probably won't remain this way forever. AI is becoming an increasingly important place for brands to be discovered, and it may someday be the biggest source of discovery above organic search. And…
📊 According to BrightEdge, Google AI Overviews generate an average of 6.02 brand mentions per query, compared to 2.37 for ChatGPT and 1.59 for Google AI Mode.
So, should you really invest more in GEO and ditch SEO?
Short answer: absolutely not.
AI systems still need a way to determine which sources deserve to be trusted. And many of the signals they rely on are the same signals SEO has been building for years:
✅ Domain authority
✅ Topical expertise
✅ Publishing consistency
✅ Backlinks
In conclusion:
🤖 GEO helps make your content easier for AI systems to understand, extract, and reference.
💻 SEO helps establish the credibility required to be considered in the first place.
A company with excellent GEO but little authority may struggle to earn citations. A company with strong authority but content that isn't optimized for AI-driven experiences may miss visibility opportunities inside AI answers.
So the takeaway is: Brands that win won't choose one over the other. They'll invest in both.
