👀 More leads, less results? Here’s why
It’s tempting to jump straight into collecting leads, especially when results feel urgent. But if there isn’t real interest behind form fills or demo requests, they rarely deliver the impact we expect.
Taking a step back to understand two key concepts can change everything:
Demand Generation vs. Lead Generation
These two are often used interchangeably. But they play different roles in strategy.
🧠 Demand generation is about building awareness, trust, and interest before someone is ready to buy. It’s about educating, helping, and staying top of mind.
⭐ Lead generation comes in once that interest exists. It’s focused on capturing it by turning people into contacts you can turn into a sale.
Demand gen starts the relationship; lead gen makes it official.
If you jump straight to lead generation (forms, demos, downloads) without building interest first, it can feel pushy. If you only do demand generation without capturing leads, you miss conversion opportunities.
Some tactics to apply each effectively:
For Demand Generation (top of funnel):
Valuable, free content (playbooks, tips, short videos).
Focus on your audience’s problems, not your product.
Show up where your audience already spends time. A good idea is to collaborate with creators or influencers who already have your audience’s trust.
For Lead Generation (once interest is built):
Deeper value content (ebooks, templates, webinars, demos).
Clear CTAs like “Download,” “Get your guide,” or “Start free.”
Keep forms short and simple (name + email is often enough).
Would your audience describe your brand as helpful or salesy? That difference is often where demand generation is missing.

Google Cloud
Google Cloud’s demand generation focuses on large-scale education through its Google Cloud Tech YouTube channel and events like Google Cloud Next, where it highlights AI advancements to build authority before any sales conversation. Its lead generation, on the other hand, relies on professional certifications like Cloud Architect and event registrations, where users share detailed information in exchange for technical validation or exclusive access.
